Watch as thousands of mourners gather at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican following the announcement of Pope Francis’ death, on Monday 21 April.
The 88-year-old had made a surprise appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica overlooking the square just hours earlier, to deliver his Easter Sunday blessing to crowds of visitors.
It was once again quickly filled with supporters and well-wishers paying tribute to the late pontiff after Francis’ death was confirmed by senior Vatican officials early on Easter Monday.
In a statement, Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican camerlengo, said: "At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father.
"His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church."
“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalised.”
